Let’s dive together into the troubled waters of Bas-Rhin in Alsace Bossue, where floods have wreaked havoc. Let’s discover the devastating consequences of this natural disaster and its repercussions on the region.
Villages affected by property damage
The floods in northern Bas-Rhin this Pentecost weekend have left significant marks in the Alsace Bossue region. The villages located between Herbitzheim and Diemeringen, along the D919, have been particularly affected. In Diemeringen, the water carried everything away in its path, flooding the shops on the main street and leaving several hundred people without electricity. The property damage is considerable, and it will take time for businesses to reopen and for infrastructure to be repaired.
Request for recognition of a state of natural disaster
The mayor of Diemeringen, Nicole Oury, announced that she will soon make a request for recognition of a state of natural disaster for her municipality. The damages are also significant in other neighboring villages, such as Mackwiller, where repairs will be necessary on forest paths. Some houses have been seriously damaged by water rising in basements and cellars.
Cleaning and repair
After the floods, the affected villages now face two priorities: repairing the damage and cleaning the disaster-stricken areas. In Herbitzheim, cleaning operations will only begin this Monday, as the water took longer to recede in this area. The bakery, completely devastated, will have to remain closed for at least three weeks. The restoration of gas and electricity services is also taking time, and many households are still without these services.
Agricultural damage
The floods also caused severe damage in the fields and agricultural plots of the Alsace Bossue region, as well as throughout the Rhine plain. Farmers will now have to do everything they can to save their crops and repair the damaged infrastructure.
Flood monitoring committee
The prefect of Bas-Rhin, Josiane Chevalier, has planned to chair a flood monitoring committee in the department. This committee will bring together the mayors of the affected villages to assess the situation and evaluate the consequences of this natural disaster.
