Alsace: A man in police custody after having hit his partner with his vehicle. Discover the troubling reasons behind this tragic event.
Life-threatening prognosis
A 44-year-old man has been taken into police custody after intentionally hitting his 33-year-old partner with a vehicle on Friday evening in Riedisheim (Haut-Rhin). According to our colleagues at L’Alsace, a flagrant investigation is underway following an attempted voluntary homicide. The suspect is in police custody and will be questioned today and tomorrow.
A drama followed by violent disputes
The victim, suffering from multiple traumatic injuries, is in critical condition with a life-threatening prognosis, according to a source close to the case. The tragic events were preceded by an initial violent dispute, which had already led the woman to the hospital. However, she fled shortly after her admission, escalating tensions. A new altercation then broke out between the couple, prompting the man to force his ex-partner out of the car before reversing and driving towards her to hit her.
A story marked by domestic violence
The couple had been separated for three months, and the man had moved to the south. However, he had already been sentenced last March to ten months in prison, eight of which were suspended, for violence against his partner. He was also prohibited from contacting his ex-partner. Unfortunately, this ban did not prevent the tragic event that led to the man’s police custody.
A persistent problem of violence against women
The case of this unfortunate assault only reinforces the concerning problem of violence against women in France. On average, a feminicide occurs every three days, according to statistics from the Ministry of Justice. In 2022, 118 feminicides were recorded, and in 2023, 94 have been reported (a number that is still declining but not finalized). These statistics, while encouraging, should be approached with caution by feminist organizations.
Support available for victims of violence
For women who are victims of violence, a national helpline, 3919, is available to provide listening and guidance. It is a free and anonymous service, accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, and is available 24/7. Victims can therefore find support and resources to help them in these difficult situations.
