A bridge with a dark past

The Pont du Corbeau (Raven Bridge), between the Rue du Vieux-Marché-aux-Poissons and the Place du Corbeau, is one of Strasbourg’s landmarks. It is recorded as early as 1308, when it was known as the “Schind Brücke”, meaning roughly “the flayers’ bridge”. At that time, the bridge was used for public executions. Condemned prisoners, particularly those guilty of parricide or infanticide, were locked in a cage and plunged into the Ill, the river that runs through the city. This practice marks the dark history of the bridge.

A notable architectural evolution

Originally built of wood, the bridge was transformed several times over the centuries. In the 19th century, it was rebuilt in metal to make it more durable and robust. These changes reflect the development of building techniques and the bridge’s strategic importance for the city.
