A square with a rich history

The Place du Marché aux Cochons de Lait (Suckling Pig Market Square), in the centre of Strasbourg, is a living testament to the city’s medieval history. Its Alsatian name, “Ferikelmärik”, recalls the specialised markets that brought the city to life in the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the square has borne various names, reflecting how its role and importance in the Strasbourg community evolved.

Typically Alsatian architecture

Strolling across the square, you are immediately struck by the half-timbered houses that surround it. With their exposed timber frames, these buildings are emblematic of Alsatian architecture. The building at number 1 is particularly remarkable :

  • Half-timbered house at no. 1: built in the 16th century, this house rises six storeys high and is adorned with balustraded balconies. It has been a listed historic monument since 1929.

Local legends and anecdotes

The square is also the setting for local legends. One of the most famous tells of Emperor Sigismund, who is said to have walked through Strasbourg barefoot in 1414. Moved by the sight, noblewomen supposedly gave him a pair of shoes bought from a local cobbler. To commemorate the event, a weathervane shaped like a medieval shoe adorns the roof of the house at number 1.

An authentic, friendly atmosphere

Today, the Place du Marché aux Cochons de Lait is a favourite spot with locals and visitors alike. Its cobbled lanes, colourful façades and traditional signs create a warm atmosphere. The many restaurants and cafés with terraces are a chance to enjoy Alsatian specialities while taking in the bustle of the square.

An ideal starting point for exploring Strasbourg

Close to Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Petite France district, the square is an excellent starting point for discovering Strasbourg’s treasures. History and architecture lovers will appreciate the many historic buildings and museums nearby.

In short, the Place du Marché aux Cochons de Lait is a must for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in Strasbourg’s rich heritage and lively culture.
