A history shaped by the centuries
The Place des Tripiers, in the heart of Strasbourg, has a rich and eventful history. Before 1944, the site was occupied by a group of traditional houses. Sadly, the bombing raids of the Second World War destroyed most of these buildings. In 1957, the square was laid out to breathe new life into this historic quarter.

A tribute to the wines of Alsace
In 2000, the Place des Tripiers was embellished with a giant barrel surrounded by seven vine-clad poles. They symbolise Alsace’s seven emblematic grape varieties: Riesling, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer and Muscat. The installation pays tribute to the region’s rich winemaking tradition.

In April 2019, a bronze statue of the knight Reinbold Liebenzeller was erected on the square. This 13th-century knight is remembered for leading Strasbourg’s troops at the Battle of Hausbergen, helping the city win its independence from Bishop Walter von Geroldseck. The work, by the sculptor Christian Fuchs, has become a symbol of freedom for Strasbourg.
A square at the heart of Strasbourg life
Close to Place Kléber and Place Gutenberg, the Place des Tripiers offers a peaceful spot in the city centre. Its name recalls the days when tripe sellers, butchers specialising in offal, plied their trade here. Today, the square is a popular place to relax for locals and visitors alike, with an authentic and friendly atmosphere.
The Place des Tripiers is a must for anyone wishing to discover Strasbourg’s historic and cultural heritage while enjoying a calm atmosphere in the heart of the city.
Enzo
Hi, I'm Enzo! I'm the guy who loves lacing up his hiking boots to explore the rugged trails of the Vosges. Passionate about nature and photography, I take you along through articles that capture the scent of fir forests and the charm of mountain lakes. I live for those moments when the sun rises over the Haut-Koenigsbourg or when I stumble upon an authentic inn along the way. My goal? To inspire you to get out, breathe in the fresh Alsatian air, and always have a great spot for a tarte flambée to share at the end of the day.
