Located in the Vosges mountains, near the town of Barr, the Grotte des Druides (Druids’ Cave) is a fascinating geological formation that blends history, legend and science. Tucked away in the Kirneck valley, this small cavity offers a unique glimpse into the natural mysteries of the Bas-Rhin.

An intriguing name
The cave’s name immediately brings to mind druidic stones and their mysteries. Yet, unlike the megaliths associated with ancient civilisations, this natural cavity owes nothing to human hands. Its appearance, reminiscent of a dolmen, probably inspired its name.
The site lies south of the famous Mont Sainte-Odile, not far from a fortified camp marked by an imposing wall of stone blocks nicknamed the “Mur Païen” (Pagan Wall). The cave opens at the southern end of this fortified enclosure, just a few metres from the structure. In the 1980s, it was still wrongly shown on some maps as a megalithic monument.

Fascinating geology
Hollowed out of Vosges sandstone dating from the Lower Triassic, the Grotte des Druides is a remarkable example of a pseudokarst formation. This phenomenon results from the natural sliding of sandstone slabs, caused by the pull of the void on the hillside. Unlike dolmens or other man-made structures, this cavity is entirely natural in origin.
First surveyed in June 1991 by Claude Chabert and Jean-Yves Bigot, the cave has a modest length of 5 metres. Its small size in no way diminishes the interest it holds for geologists and natural history enthusiasts.
A small cave with a big story
Although it extends only a short distance, the Grotte des Druides bears witness to the geological and historical riches of the Vosges. Its strategic location, close to Mont Sainte-Odile and its Cyclopean fortifications, fuels stories about the role it may have played in local legends.
Whether you are a nature lover, curious about geology or simply exploring the treasures of the Grand Est, this cave is a captivating destination to add to your itinerary.
