A historic shelter nestled in the Vosges sandstone
The Brotschgrotte, also known as the Brotsch Cave, is an impressive rock shelter located in the commune of Haegen, within the Vosges massif. This natural site, situated at an altitude of 500 meters, appeals to both geology enthusiasts and outdoor adventure lovers.
With a modest length of 12 meters, the cave is set in a spectacular environment, with a slab of red sandstone towering over the entrance to a height of 15 to 20 meters. This Vosges sandstone, formed during the Lower Triassic, offers a unique playground for climbing enthusiasts who appreciate the strength and reliefs of this ancient rock.
An impressive natural architecture
The Brotschgrotte opens with a monumental porch 20 meters wide, offering a stunning panorama of the surrounding nature. Its rocky floor and horizontal layers of red sandstone facilitate movement inside while narrating the geological history of the Vosges. This site was meticulously studied and surveyed in June 1991 by speleologists Claude Chabert and Jean-Yves Bigot, witnesses to the scientific importance of this cavity.
A local legend that blows with the wind
Beyond its natural beauty, the cave is shrouded in an intriguing legend. It tells of a greedy innkeeper from the hamlet of Saint Gall, located at the foot of Brotschberg. According to the tales, this woman, famous for her half-filled schnapps glasses, was cursed by her dissatisfied customers. Upon her death, she was condemned to haunt the cave, trapped in a barrel.
On windy days, it is said that one can still hear her howls carried by the gusts, repeating in Alsatian dialect: “Mach de spunte uff! Mach de spunte uff!” (Open the bung, let me out!). This anecdote gives the Brotschgrotte a mysterious aura, attracting the curious in search of thrills.
