Located 15 kilometres south-west of Strasbourg, Kolbsheim Castle stands proudly with a breathtaking view over the Alsace plain. The estate harmoniously combines 18th-century architecture with remarkable gardens, forming an ensemble unique in the region.

Iconic 18th-century architecture

The present castle consists of two distinct wings. The west wing, built in 1703, is a characteristic example of Rhineland architecture, with its double-pitched roof and side pavilions crowned with “imperial” domed roofs. The south wing was added in 1843 by Jean-Georges Humann, then Minister of Finance under Louis-Philippe.

Gardens combining French tradition and English romanticism

The castle grounds cover 25 hectares and are divided into two distinct parts:

  • French formal garden: covering 1.5 hectares, the upper section is adorned with conifer topiary, box hedges, statues and ornamental ponds. Hornbeams trained into shady galleries add a touch of elegance.
  • English landscape park: stretching over 10 hectares, this park slopes gently down towards the River Bruche. It is dotted with centuries-old trees of many species, alternating woodland and meadows for a peaceful, romantic atmosphere.

Enzo

Hi, I'm Enzo! I'm the guy who loves lacing up his hiking boots to explore the rugged trails of the Vosges. Passionate about nature and photography, I take you along through articles that capture the scent of fir forests and the charm of mountain lakes. I live for those moments when the sun rises over the Haut-Koenigsbourg or when I stumble upon an authentic inn along the way. My goal? To inspire you to get out, breathe in the fresh Alsatian air, and always have a great spot for a tarte flambée to share at the end of the day.
