A fortress perched on the heights

The Château de la Roche, in Bellefosse in the Bas-Rhin, stands proudly on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 820 metres. This strategic position offers a breathtaking view over the Chirgoutte valley, in the heart of the Ban de la Roche. Probably built at the end of the 13th century by a knight of the Rathsamhausen family, the castle has come down through the centuries, bearing witness to some of the great moments of Alsatian history.

A turbulent past

Over the years, the Château de la Roche went through some eventful times. In 1469, it was besieged because of the ransoming raids carried out by its occupants. After a week-long siege, the fortress surrendered and was dismantled, ending its defensive role in the region.

Architecture shaped by the terrain

The castle blends harmoniously into its rugged surroundings. The keep, built of Vosges sandstone, follows the irregular contours of the rock and covers an area of about 8 × 5 metres. This massive tower, which was probably habitable, is a remarkable example of medieval architecture adapted to the constraints of the landscape.

An immersive visit

Today, the ruins of the Château de la Roche attract history and hiking enthusiasts alike. From the village of Bellefosse, a waymarked path leads to the site in about thirty minutes. Proper walking shoes are recommended because of the rough terrain. Once at the top, visitors are rewarded with a panoramic view over the valley and the surrounding forests, an experience that is both educational and contemplative.
