On the mountainside above the vineyards of Ribeauvillé, the Château du Girsberg clings to the northern slope like a fragment of Alsace’s medieval history. Less visited than its neighbours, Saint-Ulrich and Haut-Ribeaupierre, it nonetheless offers an immersive journey into the past of the region’s lords.
A fortress born in the 13th century
The Girsberg was built in the 13th century under the name of Stein, and is mentioned as early as 1288. Constructed by the lords of Ribeaupierre, it was needed to house a new branch of the family. Its architecture suited the times: sturdy and functional, with a lord’s residence that is still clearly visible today. It took its current name in 1304, when the lordship passed to the Girsberg family.
Inhabited for a long time, the site was gradually abandoned after 1513. Once the Ribeaupierre family had settled in the town of Ribeauvillé itself, there was no longer any need to maintain the mountain castle. This withdrawal marked the start of the fortress’s decline, as it was slowly left to the elements and to oblivion.

A strategic position and a stunning panorama
Perched on the Vosges massif, the Girsberg was not an isolated defensive castle. Together with Saint-Ulrich and Haut-Ribeaupierre, it formed a trio of castles designed to watch over the Rhine plain and the roads leading to the Lièpvre valley. Its location reflects a firm grip on the territory and a concern to keep close control over the movement of people and goods.
The round keep, massive and well preserved, rises above the ruins. It rewards walkers with a spectacular panorama over the wooded ridges of the Vosges and the sea of vines sweeping down towards the Rhine.

Between legend and living heritage
Mentioned in an old Alsatian saying, the Château du Girsberg belongs to an iconic group: “Three castles on one mountain (Ribeauvillé)…”. In its own way, this line whispered in the valley tells of how deeply medieval memory is rooted in Alsace.
Less monumental than its neighbours, the Girsberg charms with its intimate, almost secret character. It is a timeless interlude, where the stones still speak of feudal loyalties, power struggles and silent abandonment.
