Gateway to the Thur valley and the last stop at the southern end of the Alsace Wine Route, Thann is best explored on foot, between its Gothic collegiate church, the ruins of the Engelbourg and the vineyards of the Rangen. Between visits, here is where to stop for a sweet treat with a cup of tea or coffee and a pastry.

Our addresses for a sweet break in Thann

Thann is not a tea-growing area, but the little town has some good pastry shops with tea rooms, both located on Rue de la 1ère Armée, the main street in the centre.

L’Histoire d’une Pause

Set up by two friends, Jessica and Mylène, this pastry shop and tea room offers a wide choice of cakes and macarons, as well as pastries with no added sugar and lighter viennoiseries. You can have breakfast, a crêpe or the dish of the day at lunchtime, with tea or coffee. A favourite with locals, with a small terrace when the weather is fine.

  • Address: 19 rue de la 1ère Armée, 68800 Thann
  • Phone: +33 3 69 07 62 84

The tea room at Ringenbach bakery and pastry shop

An artisan bakery and pastry shop with a tea room corner, Ringenbach lets you enjoy its pastries, viennoiseries and homemade breads on the spot. Its range follows the seasons, including chocolates for the festive period.

  • Address: 146 rue de la 1ère Armée, 68800 Thann
  • Closed on Sundays and public holidays

As opening hours may change, we recommend checking them with the establishment or the tourist office before your visit.

What to see in Thann between treats

  • The collegiate church of Saint-Thiébaut: a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in Alsace, built between the late 13th and early 16th centuries. Its 78-metre openwork spire was completed in 1516. Don’t miss the richly carved west portal.
  • The Witch’s Eye (Œil de la Sorcière): the remains of the keep of the Engelbourg castle, built in the 13th century and dismantled on the orders of Louis XIV in 1673. This large ring of stone lying on its side is the emblem of Thann; it takes about thirty minutes to walk up to it, with a fine view over the town.
  • The Rangen: this grand cru with dizzyingly steep slopes towers over the town. It produces powerful Alsace wines, notably Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.
  • The Burning of the Three Fir Trees (Crémation des trois sapins): every year on the evening of 30 June, on Place Joffre, three fir trees are set ablaze in memory of the legend of Saint Thiébaut, which tells of the town’s founding. A popular festival that draws thousands of visitors.

Practical information

Thann is in the Haut-Rhin, about twenty kilometres west of Mulhouse, at the entrance to the Thur valley. It is the starting point, or the finishing point, of the Alsace Wine Route and a good base for reaching the Route des Crêtes and the Grand Ballon. The Thann-Cernay tourist office is at 7 rue de la 1ère Armée (tel. +33 3 89 37 96 20): among other things, it offers guided tours of the collegiate church.

Enzo

Hi, I'm Enzo! I'm the guy who loves lacing up his hiking boots to explore the rugged trails of the Vosges. Passionate about nature and photography, I take you along through articles that capture the scent of fir forests and the charm of mountain lakes. I live for those moments when the sun rises over the Haut-Koenigsbourg or when I stumble upon an authentic inn along the way. My goal? To inspire you to get out, breathe in the fresh Alsatian air, and always have a great spot for a tarte flambée to share at the end of the day.
